Come Fish with us

Bienvenue à la Pêche dans la vallée de l'Orb en Haut Languedoc

Sébastien SALAVIN

GUIDE DE PECHE PROFESSIONNEL DIPLOME

Dear friends you would like to learn to fish, improve your technique, or simply to save some time by finding the best places to fish. For all of that I am at your service.

Fishing today no longer fulfils its primary role of obtaining food. Certain techniques and in particular fly fishing allow you to release the fish without damaging it too much; however we would not want to deprive you from tasting a trout from time to time! It's a question of communicating with nature and relaxing.. Fishing could equally turn out to be a sporting experience in the fast flowing streams of the Caroux.

A day spent with a fishing guide enables you to discover the history, the culture, fauna and flora of the region, not forgetting of course the wonderful local food!

FISHING WITH A GUIDE:

If you would like to learn about a river, and not take risks, then save time by using a guide. I'm there to help. You can profit from my local knowledge and I promise you an enjoyable time on the water's edge be it lake, river.

PERFECTING YOUR FLY FISHING

I will help you to discover where the fish arrive from and the choice of a fishing point. Together we will also select the sort of fly to use at the water's edge, and the life cycle of the flies. It could also be a question of using the right technique: dry, dragonfly in view on a line on a reel, or perhaps using streamers.

Of course it will be the occasion to correct the little problems or faults in casting a line or learning about other ways of casting, back hand, or crossbow,

I am more than happy to show you techiques other than fly fishing.

The facilities include transport by car, snacks, loan of fishing tackle if needed (advance notice please). You will need a fishing permit. The cost of this is not included, but we can arrange it for you .

FISHING FOR BEGINNERS

You choose a technique -fly fishing ,casting a line, using a toc ( a local technique), using a suitable trout minnow -Fishing for pike and sandre. fishing with just a rod and line.

We will examine the correct fishing tackle, the various techniques of casting a line. But to fish well, you must also know where to go, the behaviour of the fish

I'm there to explain all of this for you.

Of course it will be the occasion to correct the little problems or faults in casting a line or learning about other ways of casting, back hand, crossbow,

I am more than happy to show you techiques other than fly fishing.

THE FISHING AREAS THAT WE COVER:

-Hérault: - The rivers l'Orb, le Jaur, la Mare, Arles, Madale, Héric, l'Agoût, L'Arn and the lakes of Saut de Vesole et du Lauzas… -Aveyron: the Sorgue and the Dourbie

WHAT'S ON OFFER:

A minimum of a two hour course on casting fly fishing, or a sunset fishing trip

Enjoy some of France's best walks,
in the foothills of the Southern Cevennes and
Languedoc in the South of France

Walking in the National Park of Haut Languedoc

Clear blue skies, far from the madding crowd

All within an hour or so of four Ryanair Airports

Long weekends, week long stays all available with our walker's pack of maps and guide books

You can walk for miles in the hills of the National Park of Haut Languedoc; the choice of walks ranges from modest climbs to those which offer a greater challenge of up to 1000 metres (denivelées).

These walks of between 15 and 20kms or longer require some five hours plus the usual French long lunchtime picnic stop. If you are not walking in amongst the vineyards with their stony (schistes) soil instantly dry after the rain, you walk across the garrigue. The garrigue is a mixture of gorse, heathers and wild shrubs of all varieties, and at all times of the year it emits strong perfumes from the many wild herbs.

Our good friend Brian Dawson led a group of friends last May for a week of walks around the district. A DVD of their stay was made and is available to anyone planning a trip.

Brian has offered to advise any groups about walks either short starting at say 5 or 8kms up to 16, 20 kms day long walks. You can walk for miles in the hills of the Regional Park of Haut Languedoc; the choice of walks ranges from modest climbs to those which offer a greater challenge of up to 1000 metres (denivelées).

Perhaps the beauty of this part of the Cevennes are the views, you need only climb perhaps some 200 metres to come out on to a hillside with views which in some areas stretch from the Alps towards the Mediterranean and the Pyrenees.

All of the paths are well signed, but be warned that from time to time these signs can disappear especially where the forestry commission is carrying out some much needed felling and replanting.

The weather

Perhaps we should start by telling you when it is not advisable to walk, that is from late June until early September as it is too warm The local met office records show up to 300 days of blue skies a year. In mid winter you will sometimes find snow on the ground, but by late morning you need to peel off the top layers and a suntan is to be had during your lunch time stop. It does rain and providing you pack a light weight anorak, you will still be able to walk.

Where are we

An hour's drive south west of Montpellier, just 50 minutes drive from the Mediterranean coast and two hours drive from the Pyrenees

Our base is in the village of Colombières sur Orb which is at the foot of the Caroux range of mountains, just west of Lamalou les Bains.

Just south of Colombières there are several walks starting in the wine village of Faugères with its windmills.

Faugères offers several circular walks of up to 16 or 20 kms. Just to the west there is a 15 km walk from the village of Cabrerolles up to the summit of the La Coquillade. The views across the valley of the river Orb and south to the Mediterranean make the climb worthwhile. When the warm Mediterranean sun returns in the late March and April there are several walks which start above the town of St Pons just half an hour's drive west of Colombières.

Maps and Guide Books
The best for walking are those published by the French Equivalent of the Ordnance Survey, The Institut Geographique National (IGN) which produces three groups of maps in three different scales.

The large-scale map for Languedoc- Roussillon is Map Sheet no. R13, in the red series.
Scale 1: 250 000 (1cm = 2,5 km).

For Colombières sur Orb and Lamalou les Bains and the surrounding villages, you need Map Sheet no. 65, Béziers Montpellier, in the new blue (formerly green) series
. Scale 1: 100 000. (1cm = 1km)

The third, the walker's (randonneur) map, is a blue coloured Map Sheet no. 2543O (Ouest),
Scale 1: 25.000 (1cm = 250m)
This series is GPS compatible. (provided as part of the package)

Guide Books. Perhaps the best are a series published by the Federation Francaise de la Randonnée Pédestre called Topo guides. The book for the region is Réf D034 'Herault à pied' .
We will supply you with an English language book 'Walking in the Languedoc' by John Cross published by the Cicerone Press

Golf at Colombières

Can't bear the thought of the english winter, waterproofs, cold hands, soggy fairways, temporary greens?...we have the answer and it won't cost you an arm and a leg...

Here in the South of France you will have the benefit of the same sunny, dry, relatively warm Mediterranean climate all the year round as you will find on the Spanish costas, Portugal and of course the nearby Cote d'Azur.
Our recommendations are structured around three delightful courses in the central Languedoc (department of L'Herault);.
The first course is in the major seaside resort of Cap d'Agde, the second is Golf St. Thomas near Beziers, and finally the charming 9 hole course, Lamalou-les- Bains.

CAP D'AGDE
Generally recognised as the leading modern resort in France
but surprisingly little known in the UK. As well as the 18 hole championship golf course, the resort boasts one of the biggest tennis centres in Europe, a large yacht Marina, and in season many other attractions such as the Aquapark and of course the superb sandy beaches which are such a feature of the Languedoc.
The Golf club features an attractive well kept par 3 course, driving range and practice greens as well as an excellent restaurant.

GOLF ST. THOMAS, nr. BEZIERS

Set in the heart of the 'Garrigue' (mediterranean woodland) 10 minutes from Beziers and 15 minutes from the coast, this is the newest of the 3 courses and is the centre-piece of an exclusive country club style development unique in the Languedoc...beautifully manicured and challenging with many water features.

GOLF at LAMALOU - LES - BAINS

This challenging 9 hole course, just ten minutes drive from the Chateau, lies beside the River Orb in the dramatic setting of the foothills of the Languedoc Regional Park, near the famous old Spa town; for any non golfers in your party this is also an ideal centre for touring in the unspoilt scenery of inland Languedoc and there is excellent fishing nearby.

This course which plans a further nine holes has recently opened new a clubhouse and restaurant. The restaurant Le Capitelle offers a very wide range of hot and cold meals.

Of an evening or for that afternoon siesta you can return to the Chateau and relax in the gardens and in late spring and early autumn use the chateau's 15-metre spring water swimming pool.

On offer during the autumn and spring is a flexible short or long weekend or a midweek stay. You can choose between a very flexible arrangement of self-catering only, bed and breakfast and half board.

As three of our close friends are wine growers of some repute, you can be sure to be able to celebrate in style without having to get into the car.

We are located just over an hour's drive from Montpellier airport and a little over an hour and three quarters from Carcassone, Nimes and Perpignan. If you are coming from the north or Ireland then Gerona just over the border in Spain is about two and half hours comfortable drive. All of these airports are served either by Ryanair of Flybe.

Terrasses du Haut-Languedoc

The Chateau is the home of the Slow Food Group called the Haut Terrasses Convivium.

As the name suggests Slow Food is the exact opposite to Fast Food, one could list many fast food outlets, one could go back to Lord Sandwich and his introduction of the sandwich as a fast break, but it was an Italian Carlo Petrini who decided to do something when a MacDonalds opened close to the Opera in Rome.

sf

What he did to do was to form a movement that would through education and an active membership bring people back to the basics of eating well, using local products and stopping the standardisation of many of our daily food items.

Slow Food has a multi role therefore of not only pointing people in the direction of returning  to basics, but in doing so to encouraging people to eat those fruit and vegetables that are in season, to actively help small growers and producers to maintain very many varieties, races etc which are facing extinction.

These are foods now categorised as Sentinel Foods, and range from our local Navets de Pardailhan, Lentils from St Flour to Argan Oil from Morocco, cheese from Uzbekistan and an increasing number of products from the developing world.

Slow Food based in Bram close to Turin in Northern Italy has established a university where it offers course in a wide range of subjects.

It also organises a major Food Fayre every year to introduce the many thousands of visits to taste which have almost disappeared.  This coming October there will be a major international food Fayre with many hundreds of producers, tasting workshops in Turin, last November it was the turn of the Slow Food European Food Fayre in Tour in the Loire valley.  There is a major Fish Food Fayre every other year

One other very important part of Sow Food’s work is to point people to healthy eating, obesity, better balanced diets and taking time in preparing food.

Pollution is not a specify role of Slow Food, but by encourage locally sourced foods, the result is to discourage moving vast quantities of fresh food for over large distances for example from the south of Europe to Scandinavia vice versa.

It is sometimes considered to be elitist, but that is far from the truth, as many of the basic meals that we all know so well, here in France our Cassoulet, in Ireland Irish Stew, in the UK Lancashire Hotpot, and very close to us here our grilled mediterranean sardines, our oysters, tielles from Sète are all available locally at reasonable prices.

This summer we will be some running some simple cooking experience workshops based at the Chateau, to know more mail us at info@gitesdecharme.biz, or call Chris Elliott on 00 33 4 67 36 66 18
